Some Resume Facts

  • the purpose of a resume is not to get a job, but to get you an interview!

  • your resume has literally only seconds to make an impression

  • keep your resume short and factual (no more than 2 pages)

  • use point form sentences

  • you should always use perfect grammar, spelling, and punctuation

  • do not include on your resume
    1. reason for leaving your job
    2. references (prepare a separate list)
    3. short forms. E.g. streets, and cities should be spelled out in full

  • it is the most effective way of finding employment before an employer decides to advertise a job opening

  • know the ABC's to successful Cold Calls

  • use the local business directory to create an employer contact list

  • Stirling & Associates Inc. offers a FREE Internet Training course for those unemployed and wishing to pursue alternative job search techniques

  • Mohawk College offers the Job Connect program for any youth (ages 16-24) who are out of school or training and out of work, with the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge needed to find and keep a job

  • HRDC sponsors a Self-Employment Benefit Program (SEB) where individuals can start their own business without losing their E.I. benefits. Also available is a six week Entrepreneurship (PFE) program that prepares you for your business venture

  • There are Job Finding Clubs available for adults in both Hamilton and Niagara, at no charge.  You will be able to tap into the hidden job market, discover new employment possibilities.  You will be provided with telephone, fax, phtocopying and Internet access, plus envelopes and postage.  Benefit from the coaching and support of trained facilitators and receive their follow-up services

  • There is a G.E.D. confidential pre-test available where you will be individually assessed before applying for and taking your General Equivalency Diploma (Grade 12 Equivalency issued by the Ministry of Education)
